Centre Postpones Mandatory Six-Airbags Rule For Passenger Cars By One Year

The union government has postponed the implementation of the mandatory six-airbags rule for passenger cars till October 2023 due to global supply-chain constraints.

The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari on Thursday took to Twitter “Considering the global supply chain constraints being faced by the auto industry and its impact on the macroeconomic scenario, it has been decided to implement the proposal mandating a minimum of 6 Airbags in Passenger Cars (M-1 Category) w.e.f 01st October 2023”.

The serious move took place after the death of the chairman of Tata Sons Cyrus Mistry in a road accident, this became a topic of debate and concern about the citizens' lives travelling on Indian roads, and after this incident, the ministry tried to make six airbags mandatory instead of two.

In another tweet, Gadkari said, Safety of all passengers travelling in motor vehicles irrespective of their cost and variants is the foremost priority. Road Transport Miniter tried to make six airbags mandatory from October month of this year.
