Driving India’s Green Future: The Auto Sector’s Push For Sustainability

The hum of India's automotive sector, a powerful engine of economic growth and personal mobility, carries with it a significant environmental responsibility. Our burgeoning cities grapple with the consequences of increasing vehicular emissions, impacting air quality and contributing to the global challenge of climate change. The reliance on fossil fuels presents not only an environmental concern but also an economic vulnerability in the long run. Recognising this critical juncture, the Indian automotive industry has embarked on a transformative journey towards sustainability, and the initial strides are beginning to paint a promising picture.
Over the past few years, a concerted effort across the automotive spectrum has started to yield tangible environmental benefits. The increasing adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) stands out as a key achievement. According to an analysis by EVreporter based on Vahan Dashboard data, in calendar year 2024 alone, close to 2 million EVs were sold across India, marking a substantial 25.4 per cent growth from the previous year.
This surge was spearheaded by electric two-wheelers, which accounted for nearly 60 per cent of total EV sales, and a robust 18 per cent growth in electric three-wheelers, signalling a significant shift in personal and commercial mobility choices. While the electric car segment is still evolving, it has also demonstrated a steady upward trajectory with a 12.8 per cent year-on-year increase in sales.
This growing preference for electric mobility is already making a positive impact, with industry estimates suggesting that the current EV fleet in India has helped avoid 10 million tonnes of carbon emissions between 2020 and 2024. In urban areas, the silent and emission-free operation of EVs directly combats harmful pollutants like PM2.5 that significantly contribute to air pollution.
JSW MG Motor India has been an active participant in this nationwide movement towards sustainability. We strongly believe ‘EV Sahi hai’ and it is evident in our growing portfolio of electric vehicles, including the MG ZS EV, offering a substantial range of up to 461 km on a single charge, and the MG Comet EV, specifically designed for urban environments with its compact size and zero tailpipe emissions. Beyond just offering EVs, we are deeply invested in creating a sustainable ecosystem. Our Halol manufacturing facility has reached a major environmental milestone, with 65 per cent of its energy requirements now fulfilled through renewable sources.
Additionally, the introduction of India's first green pretreatment line in our Paint Shop is set to cut carbon emissions by an estimated 1,800 tonnes each year. This initiative is part of our broader commitment to sustainable manufacturing, which has already resulted in an impressive 47 per cent overall reduction in carbon emissions from our manufacturing processes since 2022. Furthermore, we are actively exploring innovative solutions like the second life of EV batteries through our "Project Revive," aiming to repurpose used batteries for energy storage and contribute to a circular economy. We also prioritise the use of sustainable materials, such as the vegan leather in the MG Gloster, and continuously strive to minimize waste and conserve resources in our operations.
Looking ahead, the future of sustainable mobility in India is brimming with exciting technological advancements. We anticipate wider adoption of even more energy-efficient battery technologies, longer driving ranges, and faster charging capabilities, making EVs an even more practical and appealing choice for a broader range of consumers. The development of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and connected car technologies can optimise traffic flow and reduce energy consumption. Furthermore, the exploration of alternative fuels like green hydrogen and biofuels holds immense potential for decarbonising segments where electrification might face limitations.
However, realising this sustainable future requires a unified and collaborative approach. Continued strong policy support from the government, fostering research and development, and incentivising both manufacturers and consumers are crucial. The industry needs to continue investing in localising manufacturing, developing robust charging infrastructure, and ensuring the responsible recycling and disposal of batteries. Consumer awareness and participation are equally vital. By making informed choices and embracing sustainable mobility options, every individual can contribute to a greener India.
The journey towards a truly sustainable automotive sector in India is ongoing, but the progress made thus far provides a strong foundation and a clear direction. By continuing to innovate, collaborate, and prioritize environmental responsibility, we can collectively steer India towards a future where mobility is efficient and convenient and also clean, green, and in harmony with our planet. The combined efforts of the industry, government, and consumers will be the driving force behind this essential transformation, ensuring a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
