EVs Making Place In Real Market,Launches So Far

The electric vehicle revolution is at moving at a good pace in India and with time Indians are shifting towards EVs over ICEs. In the last couple of years, the advancement in the electric vehicle seems like we will soon drive a smartphone on wheels. And with increasing demand, EVs are becoming affordable day by day.

Electric vehicles are not a new technology in the world or India. People and corporates are just accepting it right now. In 2001, the Car named Reva was launched by Maini. It was a two-seater EV. Then in 2010 Mahindra and Mahindra acquired 55 percent of the stake in Reva EV company. 5,000 cars were sold after this acquisition. This model had acid batteries and a DC motor producing a maximum torque of 17.8 horsepower. But later REVA replaced the lead acid batteries with Lithium-ion batteries which resulted in a reduction in charging times and increased range with improving the performance of the vehicle. REVA claimed the range of 120 km per charge after the lithium-ion battery. REVA L-ion was also known as e2o.

Mahindra did not get the expected succus through e2o and discontinued it in 2019. However, at the same time, Hyundai came up with their new electric vehicle in India. Hyundai Kona is an electric SUV, which is ensembled locally in India. Kona comes for Rs 23 lakh and has a range of 452km per charge. It has an electric motor that has a horsepower of 136 and can produce torque up to 395 nm and it has a battery pack of 39.2kWh.

Tata also joined the race of making the electric vehicle in early 2020 by launching the first electric product in the market which is the Nexon EV. It is an electric version of Nexon. The compact SUV comes for Rs 18 lakh and has a range of 312km per charge. It has an electric motor having a horsepower of 129 and can produce torque up to 245nm and it has a battery pack of 30.2kWh. Nexon is a game changer in the Indian EV market as 10,000 units sold in less than two years of span. And now it has a Max variant too with a battery pack of 40.5 kWh which has a range of 437 km.

MG ZS EV also joined the league in 2020 despite being a new player in the Indian automotive market. Its EV has a 44.5kWh battery pack with a range of going up to 340km per charge. It has an electric motor producing 143 horsepower and 353 nm torque. The starting price of Kona is Rs 20 lakh

Tata again came up with an EV in 2021, by launching the EV version of Tata Tigor. The price of the Tigor EV is Rs 12.49 lakh and has a range of 306km per charge. It has an electric motor having a horsepower of 73.75 and can produce torque up to 170nm and it has a battery pack of 26kWh.

Mahindra also rejoined the league by launching their XUV400 EV, which is the electric version of the XUV300. Mahindra has claimed the range of the XUV 400 is up to 456 km on a single charge and the motor can produce torque up to 310nm.

Recently Tata has launched the most affordable EV at an introductory price of 8.49 lakhs for its first 20,000 customers and the car is an electric version of Tiago. This EV has a range of 315km per charge and the motor can produce torque up to 114nm and have a horsepower of 73.75 with a battery pack of 24 kWh.
