Union Minister of Transport Nitin Jairam Gadkari stated that the government is looking for new solutions and opportunities in technology to replace toll plazas and reduce long queues and traffic jams at toll plazas. He said this while addressing the Rajya Sabha on 3 August.
Last year and in march Nitin Gadkari spoke words about introducing the GPS-based tracking system to collect the toll from vehicles. This was not the first time when Nitin Gadkari spoke or discussed such an idea in front of the Parliament.
“We are in the process of introducing GPD instead of FASTag while using satellite and on the basis of which we want to take the toll. Technology is also available on the number plate and there is good technology available in India” said Nitin Gadkari.
Gadkari also said that a new toll collection system will be introduced in the upcoming six months along with the finest technology.
Gadkari also stated that there will be a highly advanced computerised system that may be used to provide relief instead of a toll plaza with the number plate technology. Also, he focuses on laws and fines which will be introduced for the defaulter who doesn’t pay the toll tax or escape them. With this technology, users will only pay the toll for the time they are driving on highways which will be deducted from their account directly.
The FASTag system is expected to continue for a few more years before the new technologies come on the market. With new technology, the vehicle will be tracked by its movement on the highway so that system can detect and calculate the price of running or using the highway. Under this system, users have to link their bank accounts, also with GPS-based technology the local residential passes and other concessions will be withdrawn.
