Volkswagen Polo Bids Goodbye To Indian Market

After nearly 12 years of journey, German carmaker Volkswagen has officially discontinued the production of its most loved hatchback Polo in India. On 7 April 2022, Volkswagen India shared a letter on their social media handles where they officially made this statement. This evoked a wave of emotions amongst the consumers who owned one, recalling times when they had purchased their car.

Polo was first introduced to the Indian market at the Auto Expo back in 2010 and started its production in 2009 at the Chakan plant in Pune. Since then Polo has been one of the most successful cars of Volkswagen in India. In fact, it was also amongst the company’s one of the safest cars as per the NCAP rating with 4 stars in 2014 and offered dual airbags.

Passing on the legacy to its sibling, Volkswagen is trying to carry forward the same with its SUVW and sedan models, Taigun and Virtus respectably. The impact Polo created in the Indian market is huge. With the end of Polo’s journey, it seems like Volkswagen has some new plan for India or will we witness a next-generation Polo in an all new avatar?

As a celebration of 12 years, Volkswagen had recently launched a special limited edition of the car called Polo Legend. The special edition is limited to only 700 units and is priced at Rs. 10.25 lakh (ex-showroom).

This limited edition of Polo is powered by 1.0 litre Turbocharged Stratified Injection (TSI) engine that delivers a performance of 110PS (81kw) 5000-5500rpm and kicks out 175Nm of peak torque. This edition is mated with a six speed automatic gearbox with disc brakes on the front and drum on the rear.
