Why the JSW MG Windsor Could Be A Game-Changing EV
The JSW MG Windsor is based on the Wuling Cloud EV, which has been successful in the Indonesian market
JSW MG Motors has been teasing a new electric vehicle called the Windsor for the past week. This vehicle, which exists in foreign markets like Indonesia under MG's sister brand Wuling as the Cloud EV, is set to disrupt the EV spectrum in India. It promises to be one of the most unique offerings in the market, particularly due to its price point. Here are five reasons why it could reinvent the EV market in India:
- This will be the first electric car in India which will have a top-end price of less than Rs 20 lakh but will have a range of up to 500 kilometres, which will enable the elimination of range anxiety. This will be possible with 37.6kWh and 50.7kWh batteries. In real-world use, the top-end model of this car will likely be able to provide upwards of 400 kilometres of range. MG could have a starting price of as low as Rs 10 lakhs and may even top out the car to 18 lakhs undercutting all the other EVs in the price segment.
- The price will be low because the batteries of this car will be sourced locally, which will enable the low price. But even if one looks at the base model of this vehicle, it will provide upwards of 250 kilometres of range while being cheaper than the industry leader Tata Nexon EV.
- It will be a loaded car with a 15-inch main infotainment display, 6 cameras, level 2 ADAS, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof, 6 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system and 5-star rated chassis, which will make it one of the safest and most comfortable cars in the segment with reclining rear seats.
- This is going to be a big car. It is expected to measure 4,295mm x 1,850mm x 1,652mm — with its boot having 500 litres of capacity. It will have a wheelbase of 2,700mm and will have class-leading ground clearance with MG having reportedly modified the car for India, providing more than 200mm of ground clearance. It will rival the Nexon EV in this regard.
- It will be a reasonably quick vehicle too, providing up to 134 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque. It may not be up there with the Nexon EV or even the MG ZS EV in terms of pure speed, but it will likely be the most aggressively priced one and in terms of backseat comfort, it will rival cars like the Kia Carens and Hyundai Alcazar, though it will not be a 7-seater.
The JSW MG Windsor is based on the Wuling Cloud EV, which has been successful in the Indonesian market. While specific features may differ in the Indian version, the Cloud EV's performance in Indonesia suggests promising potential for the Windsor in India's growing electric vehicle market.
