Delhi Govt. Takes Away The Subsidies From Tata Nexon EV

The Delhi Government has been offering various amount of subsidies on electric vehicles and Tata Motors – Tata Nexon EV being the only Electric Compact SUV that is priced under 20lakhs before subsidies. Recently the Delhi government had slapped a show-cause notice on Tata Motors, the makers of the Nexon EV, on the complaint of an owner who was not satisfied by the “Real World” range of the Nexon EV. The complainant noted that though the company claims the car is capable of delivering a driving range of 312 km per charge, his vehicle has not been able to achieve a range of more than 200 km even after complying with the dealer's advice to address the issue.  

Delhi Transport Minister - Kailash Gahlot on Monday tweeted - 'The Delhi government has decided to suspend subsidy on an EV car model, pending the final report of a Committee, due to complaints by multiple users of sub-standard range performance'

Under Delhi Government’s Electric Vehicle Policy, EVs enjoy subsidies – Tata Nexon EV buyer enjoys a total subsidy of INR 3Lakh. Bringing the effective on-road price of the Tata Nexon EV to INR 14,55,846 from the actual cost of INR 17,58,946

'We are committed to supporting EVs, but not at the cost of trust & confidence of citizens in claims by manufacturers,' Gahlot said in his tweet. Meanwhile, Tata Nexon EV has been leading in the Electric Vehicle Segment, Between April-December 2020 2,244 units were sold, while MG Motors sold 868 units of ZS EV, Hyundai managed 138 units with the Kona Electric.

In An official statement, Tata Motors Spokesperson said “The range at single full charge (312 km) for the Nexon EV is basis the certification received from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), which is the official body that independently tests all mass-produced vehicles under standard/defined test conditions before they can be offered to customers. As with conventional vehicles (with IC engines), the actual range achieved in EVs is dependent on AC usage, individual driving style, and the actual conditions in which the vehicle is driven. The range achievement is also a function of familiarity with the new technology, and customers report improvements upwards of 10% within 4-6 weeks of familiarity”

When we tested the Tata Nexon EV, the real-world range was largely dependent on the style of driving and the amount of “REGEN” opportunities. An electric vehicle is not the same as an Internal Combustion engine vehicle and we did require to change our habits a bit while our time with the Nexon EV.
