Tata Motors on Thursday announced a pivotal partnership between its electric vehicle subsidiary, Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). This collaboration marks a substantial step in the development of Tata's 'Avinya' range of electric cars.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between TPEM and JLR, Tata Motors will be licensing JLR's advanced electrified modular architecture (EMA) platform. The licensing agreement involves a royalty fee paid by TPEM to JLR for the privilege of utilizing the EMA platform in the development of the Avinya series.
Additionally, both companies will enter into an engineering services agreement (ESA) to address TPEM's content requirements for the initial vehicle within the Avinya lineup. This agreement signifies a shared commitment to technical collaboration and knowledge transfer.
JLR's EMA platform, which will serve as the foundation for the Avinya series, is specifically optimised for Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) proportions. This optimisation allows for the maximisation of interior space, comfort, and cutting-edge technological features. Notably, this platform is set to underpin Tata Motors' next generation of electric mid-sized SUVs, destined for international markets, with a projected launch date starting in 2025.
The 'Avinya' concept, initially unveiled in 2022, symbolises Tata Motors' determination to bring forth a new breed of world-class electric vehicles. These vehicles will incorporate the latest technological advances, including artificial intelligence, software, and cutting-edge engineering.
Tata Motors anticipates that this partnership with JLR, and the incorporation of the EMA platform, will position the 'Avinya' series as globally competitive and poised for the future. The collaboration is expected to yield electric vehicles that meet global standards in efficiency and range, reflecting a commitment to advanced electric vehicle technology.
