BW Most Influential Women: Sulajja Firodia Motwani - The Gender Bender: Transforming Workplaces

I have always been passionate about driving change, both within the automotive industry and society at large. Today, I would like to address the pressing issue of inclusion and diversity, particularly in the automotive sector, and how the emergence of Electric Vehicles (EVs) presents a unique opportunity to tackle this challenge in our sector.

Inclusion and diversity are not just buzzwords; they are essential components of a thriving economy and a progressive society. With India aspiring to be a $7 trillion economy and one of the world's top three economic powers, it is crucial that our manufacturing sector grows 16 times, and women's participation becomes a key driving force behind this growth. By unlocking the full potential of women in the workforce, we can contribute to a more robust and sustainable economic future.

The automotive sector, traditionally male-dominated, faces specific challenges when it comes to gender diversity. By actively encouraging women to join and thrive in the automotive sector, we not only tap into untapped potential but also bring diverse perspectives that drive innovation and elevate the entire industry.

I believe that the advent of electric vehicles presents an opportunity to break down barriers and redefine the industry, making it more inclusive and diverse. We view these challenges as opportunities for positive change. As the industry undergoes a transformative shift towards cleaner and more efficient transportation solutions, there is a chance to reset the gender balance. Unlike traditional engine-based vehicles with much more emphasis on mechanical engineering-based parts and manufacturing processes, EVs comprise much more of electronics and software. This will enable more women to enter the core areas of R&D and assembly of EVs. Our proud example, where our group company Kinetic Communications, maker of EV electronics stands as a testament to this commitment where the entire shop floor is staffed by remarkable women, showcasing that gender diversity is not just attainable but can indeed be a driving force behind success. At Kinetic Green also, we have attained 25 per cent women participation on the shop floor and aiming to ramp it up to 50 per cent in the next 2 years.

The Electric Vehicles (EVs) sector is also creating new opportunities for all, including women, in the development of the EV eco-system, from EV charging to battery swapping to EV components to entrepreneurship.

In my current role as the Co-chair of FICCI's Women Empowerment Committee, I am actively engaged in efforts to increase women's participation in the corporate sector. Through this influential platform, we are working towards creating policies and initiatives that foster a more inclusive environment for women across various industries. It's not just a commitment; it's a responsibility to ensure that the corporate landscape becomes a place where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute meaningfully.

In conclusion, our journey in the EV sector is not just about innovation and green technology. It's a testament to the transformative power of inclusion and diversity. By challenging stereotypes and actively working towards gender balance, we are not only shaping the future of transportation but also inspiring a generation of women to break into traditionally male-dominated industries. As we witness the rise of EVs, let us also celebrate the rise of women in the automotive sector – a true gender bender for a brighter and more equitable future.
