In a fresh notification issued by Delhi Traffic Police the maximum speed limit has been revised for all types of vehicles. Mr. Satyawan Gautam, Deputy Commissioner of Police/Traffic (Modernization) states “unregulated plying of motor vehicles on a high speed on the roads of NCT of Delhi is endangering the life of motorists as well as other road users/commuters. And it is necessary to regulate the speed of motor vehicles on the roads of NCT of Delhi for the safety of motorists as well as other road users”
Delhi Traffic Police has divided vehicles into three categories with different limits for all of them.
M1 Category vehicles:- Motor vehicles used for the carriage of passengers comprising not more than eight seats in addition to the driver’s seat.
M2 & M3 Category vehicles:- Motor vehicles (LMVs - up to 7.5 tonne) used for the carriage of passengers comprising nine or more seats in addition to the driver’s seat.
N Category vehicles:- Motor vehicles used for the carriage of goods
While the maximum speed differs for all these three categories of vehicles, on all minor roads inside residential areas, commercial markets, and service roads, all categories of vehicles will have to maintain a maximum speed of 30kmph. The notification also states if the speed detected is within 5 percent of the maximum speed specified in this notification, No cognizance of the violation of the speed limit shall be taken under section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Delhi Traffic Police has also notified all concerned civic road maintaining agencies to erect the corresponding informatory sign boards indicating the speed limits at all prominent locations on the road stretches in their areas of jurisdiction for guidance and convenience of the road users.
This order comes into force with immediate effect
