First Drive Review - MG Windsor EV Pro: More Range, More Reasons To Go Electric

The MG Windsor EV Pro impresses with long driving range, a spacious tech-rich cabin, and the confidence of a CUV platform. It's a refined, practical electric crossover built for both city life and scenic escapes. Basically, it’s electric mobility, upgraded!

When JSW MG Motor launched the Windsor EV, it quickly became one of India’s best-selling electric vehicles. Now, with the Windsor EV Pro, MG has taken things up a notch. I spent a full day behind the wheel of this new variant, driving through city traffic, open highways, and even a brief trip to the outskirts. Here’s what stood out.

It started at 6 a.m., just as the sun peeked over the skyline of Guwahati. The city was just waking up, and I had the keys to MG’s latest upgrade - the Windsor EV Pro, now reborn with a smarter mind and a heart that beats quieter and longer.

From the first glance, it felt like the car wasn’t just updated - it had grown up. The Aurora Silver paint glistened like morning dew, and the new 18-inch dual-tone alloys looked ready for business. As I slipped into the cabin, I was greeted by a sense of calm with clean lines, soft-touch surfaces, and the promise of a quiet journey ahead. This wasn’t going to be just another test drive. It felt like a conversation with the future.

The plan was simple: drive through the city, hit the highway, and head to Umiam Lake near Shillong. It’s a route with a bit of everything - traffic, open roads, hill climbs, and tight corners. It was a perfect setting to test how the Windsor EV Pro handles everyday conditions and a bit more. But before I tell you about my experience, let’s take a closer look at what this upgraded EV has to offer.

What New in the Windsor EV – Essence Pro?

  • 52.9 kWh Prismatic Cell Battery (449 km Claimed Range)
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) & Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Tech
  • Level-2 ADAS
  • Powered Tailgate]
  • Dual-tone Ivory Interiors
  • R18 dual-tone Alloy Wheels
  • Three New Exterior Colour Options: Celadon Blue, Aurora Silver & Glaze Red

Styling That Turns Heads

From the moment I saw it, the changes were clear. The Windsor Pro looks sharper with three new exterior colour options as Celadon Blue, Aurora Silver, and Glaze Red. I drove the Aurora Silver one, and it attracted curious stares throughout the day. The 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels add to its premium vibe. And, there is even a Powered Tailgate, small addition, but an added convenience.

MG could have easily added a few cosmetic tweaks, slapped a “Pro” badge on the Windsor, and called it a day. But they didn’t. They built something that feels genuinely elevated - in comfort, in intelligence, and in purpose.

Interior and Design Tweaks

Inside, the Windsor Pro feels more premium than before. The new dual-tone Ivory and Black interiors look clean and fresh.

The large 15.6-inch touchscreen is still the centerpiece, now running on MG’s updated i-SMART system that offers 80+ connected features and over 100 voice commands. It responded quickly, and the navigation, music, and climate controls were easy to use while driving, though can be a bit distracting while driving.

The seats remain supremely comfortable, especially the 135° reclinable Aero Lounge seats, which truly feel business-class. It doesn’t just look better - it feels more mature.

A Clear Step Up: What’s New in the Pro?

The biggest change is the larger 52.9 kWh battery, which gives it a certified range of 449 km (MIDC) - a healthy jump from its previous variants. I covered over 200 km in varied conditions and still had more than 40 per cent battery left at the end of the day. Real-world range seems reliable.

MG’s new Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) functions are smart additions as well, a great feature for road-trippers or professionals working on the go. And the V2V feature can even share battery power with another compatible EV.

Another highlight is the introduction of ADAS Level 2 features. These are not just fancy additions; they genuinely help in day-to-day driving. Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keep Assist, and Forward Collision Warning all worked smoothly on my test drive. It’s comforting tech, especially for long highway trips. With 12 major ADAS features, MG is clearly taking safety seriously. These systems don’t feel intrusive; they assist quietly in the background unless absolutely needed.

And for those looking at long-term ownership, MG is offering a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner and a 60 per cent assured buyback after 3 years, which adds peace of mind.

A New Pro Variant - Exclusive Pro

Following the strong market response to the MG Windsor EV - Essence Pro Variant, where all 8,000 introductory units were booked within a day, the company immediately introduced a new variant: Windsor Exclusive Pro. This new variant is designed to bridge the gap between the Essence and the top-end Essence Pro, delivering an enhanced balance of range, technology, and premium features.

On the Road: Smooth, Silent, Solid

There’s something poetic about driving through the quiet hills of the Northeast. The slow change from city buzz to hill-town calm, the twisty climbs, the clouds that greet you mid-route, doing it in an electric vehicle makes it even more special.

The first leg through the city felt effortless. The acceleration is linear but strong as I pressed the pedal the torque arrived in a smooth, silent wave. The 136 PS motor gives it a good push when needed, especially in the city. The suspension felt slightly stiffer than expected, likely tuned for better stability at higher speeds. That said, road grip and control were excellent, even during quick lane changes. The higher seating position, thanks to the CUV platform, gave me a commanding view of the road.

Level 2 ADAS suite came alive gently, the car slowed down as traffic built up, stayed centred in its lane. The adaptive cruise control was more like a co-pilot than a robot. It didn’t shout or panic. It simply helped.

Once I hit the highway towards Shillong, I switched to Sport mode. The car adapted instantly. It cruised quietly, soaking up bumps with ease. That low center of gravity, due to the underfloor battery, combined with the crossover stance gave the car a stable, balanced feel even on tighter corners. With every curve and climb, the Windsor EV Pro quietly proved its case, not just as a smart city EV, but as a refined electric crossover ready for real-world adventures.

This was more than a drive; it was a discovery of a car and a landscape, both quietly powerful in its own right. No engine rumble, no gear shifts - just smooth torque, clean air, and the soft hum of the MG Windsor EV Pro as it glided through winding roads, dense greenery, and the occasional mountain mist.

As the altitude climbed and the roads narrowed, the Windsor Pro’s regenerative braking system came into its own - helping slow the car gently through descents while topping up the battery bit by bit. It’s a feature I came to appreciate more as we approached the scenic curves near Umiam Lake. It may not be sporty, but the Windsor Pro has a quiet elegance to how it drives - silent, responsive, and smooth.

Verdict

This wasn’t just a city run or a quick spin around a test track. It was a full day with the car, and by the end of it, I had a much clearer sense of what MG’s updated EV is really like to live with. It’s a no gimmick, a genuine all-rounder that blends the comfort of a crossover with the clean efficiency of an EV.

The new tech and ADAS features are meaningful, not just marketing fluff. For those who liked the previous variants of the Windsor EV, the Pro is simply better. And for many, it might be the right time to go Pro. So, if you’re looking for a spacious family EV with real-world range, solid build quality, and the ability to handle city commutes and weekend getaways, it checks all the right boxes.

And, as I parked beside the Umiam Lake, I realised how fitting this drive was. The Windsor EV Pro doesn’t rush. It flows. It’s not here to shout. It whispers change. And it’s clearly ready for the long road ahead. In a world full of noise, this EV offers something rare: peace of mind, and peace on the road.

Where the Windsor Pro Shines

CUV Platform: The car feels like it belongs in both city and hilly areas. The higher ground clearance inspires confidence, and you don’t worry about scraping on uneven patches.

Cabin Comfort: The plush seats, rear AC vents, and flat floor make long journeys comfortable for everyone, especially in the back seat.

Infotainment & Connectivity: Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, 360-degree camera, and voice-assist all work smoothly.

Silent Performer: Acceleration is effortless and overtakes are easy, even on narrow climbs. The Windsor EV Pro doesn’t shout; it glides.

Where It Could Be Better

Charging Infrastructure Still Lags: Though MG’s app helps locate chargers, but better roadside options would improve long-distance convenience and would ease range anxiety for less-experienced EV drivers.

Lack of Rear Sunshades: A small omission, but it would’ve been useful on sunny days.
