Maruti Suzuki To Launch Its First EV On Jan 17, 2025 At Bharat Mobility Show

With a comprehensive ecosystem to support electric mobility, this mid-size SUV will offer range of over 500 km on a single charge

Indian carmaker, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch its first electric vehicle (EV) at the Bharat Mobility Show 2025, signaling a major shift in the country's mobility landscape. The Company does not only plan to launch an EV but is also planning to set up a complete ecosystem to support its adoption. One of the key issues that potential EV owners face is range anxiety—the fear of running out of charge mid-journey without access to charging infrastructure. And, to counter this, Maruti’s upcoming electric vehicle will offer a range of over 500 km on a single charge.

Moreover, Maruti says that while 95 per cent of EV owners charge their vehicles at home, long-distance travel still raises concerns. To provide customers with peace of mind, the company is working on creating an infrastructure to ensure a seamless and stress-free driving experience across India.

Maruti’s first electric offering will be a mid-size premium SUV that will be positioned as a versatile family vehicle. Maruti’s decision to enter the market with an SUV aligns with the rising demand for this segment in India, where SUVs dominate sales charts.

Even as Maruti embraces electrification, the company remains bullish on alternative powertrains. It has already witnessed a 30 per cent growth in CNG vehicle sales, demonstrating that there is still significant demand for CNG-powered cars. In addition, Maruti has plans for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, a technology still in the early stages of development. This forward-thinking approach indicates that the company is looking beyond the current EV trend to explore other sustainable energy sources that could reshape the future of transportation.

As Maruti prepares for its EV launch, the company is keenly aware of the changing dynamics in India’s auto market, particularly with regard to the growing influence of digitisation. The rapid spread of technology is bridging the gap between urban (India) and rural (Bharat) markets. Access to digital services and information is helping customers across the country make informed decisions, with the demand for modern mobility solutions rising in smaller towns and cities.
