The Automotive Skills Development Council (ASDC) recently hosted its Annual Conclave 2024 in New Delhi with the theme "Collaborate, Empower, Accelerate, and Achieve". the event brought together key stakeholders from the automotive industry, including policymakers, industry leaders, educators, and training providers, for high-level discussions on the future of automotive skills development in India.
The event was graced by the presence of Ramdas Athawale, Minister of State for Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, as the Chief Guest. In his address, Athawale emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting marginalised communities through skill development. “The automotive sector provides numerous opportunities for India’s youth, and through efforts like ASDC’s programs, we can ensure these opportunities are inclusive,” he said. Athawale also unveiled ASDC’s ambitious plan to train 8 lakh gig economy workers by 2030, focusing on those employed in India’s rapidly growing e-commerce sector.
Empowering India's Youth Through Skill Development
ASDC’s initiative, aimed at training 10 per cent of India’s over 8 million gig economy workers, is set to focus on key areas such as soft skills, road safety, and providing medical and insurance coverage. This program will benefit communities from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including SC, ST, OBC communities, and women, particularly in the electric two- and three-wheeler segment. Minister Athawale praised the plan, expressing support for electric vehicle initiatives that would provide sustainable livelihoods and employment for marginalised groups.
F R Singhvi, President of ASDC, in his keynote address, reiterated the critical role of skill development in addressing the challenges posed by an evolving automotive sector. “Today’s conclave has showcased the tremendous potential that can be unlocked when we empower individuals with the right skills and knowledge,” he stated, stressing the importance of collaboration in driving sustainable growth for the industry.
Industry Collaboration and Certification Highlights
Vinkesh Gulati, Vice President of ASDC, also highlighted the significance of collaboration in strengthening India’s automotive skilling ecosystem. "With the rapid expansion of the automotive sector, the support of a skilled workforce becomes crucial. By working together, we can ensure India remains competitive on the global stage," Gulati said.
The conclave saw various panel discussions, with key insights shared by representatives from Bajaj, Toyota, and Hero MotoCorp on topics like CSR collaborations and inclusive skill development. A notable announcement from Bajaj was the launch of the BEST (Bajaj Excellence in Skill Training) program, focusing on robotics and automation training for graduates and diploma holders, with ASDC as the assessment and certification partner.
Another significant highlight was the Certified Candidates Convocation, where candidates from ASDC’s flagship programs, including SAKHI SAKSHAM, SHAKTI, SANKALP-SAARTHI, and SANKALP-JEEVIKA, were awarded certifications for their achievements. Of special note was the participation of 45 young women trained by ASDC, showcasing the organisation's focus on empowering women and promoting gender equality in the automotive workforce.
The event concluded with the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with ten new automotive firms, aimed at strengthening public-private partnerships and enhancing the skilling ecosystem across India. These collaborations will help ensure that India’s automotive workforce is future-ready, equipped with the latest technological skills, and prepared for the challenges of a globalized industry.
