Volkswagen Shares Affordable Electric Car Plans; Entry-Level Model To Debut In 2027

Volkswagen is taking a bold step towards affordable electric mobility with a new entry-level electric car priced at approximately €20,000 (around INR 18 lakh). The company revealed a first glimpse of the model during a recent works meeting in Wolfsburg, where CEO Thomas Schäfer outlined the brand’s ambitious roadmap up to 2030.
Affordable EVs for Mass Adoption
Volkswagen aims to make electric vehicles (EVs) accessible to a broader audience. The new entry-level model, expected to debut in 2027, will be part of Volkswagen’s evolving electric small car family. This follows the upcoming ID.2all, scheduled for release in 2026 at a base price of under €25,000.
“With this car, we are making electric mobility attractive and accessible for everyone,” said Schäfer, emphasizing that the project aligns with Volkswagen’s goal of producing high-quality, affordable EVs in Europe, for Europe.
Wolfsburg’s Role in Volkswagen’s EV Future
The company reaffirmed Wolfsburg’s importance as the heart of its EV production. The plant will manufacture future electric versions of the Golf and T-Roc on the new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), designed for next-generation digitalised electric vehicles.
The Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) will represent the next generation of an all-electric, fully digitalised, highly scalable mechatronics platform based on a uniform system architecture.
Volkswagen’s decision to move Golf production to Mexico will free up Wolfsburg’s capacity for advanced EV manufacturing. Schäfer assured employees that Wolfsburg would set new standards in production efficiency and innovation.
A Three-stage Plan for the Future
Volkswagen has laid out a strategic roadmap, dubbed the “Triple A” plan:
The company has already made significant progress in electric mobility, having sold over 1.35 million ID. models globally since 2019.
What’s Next?
Volkswagen plans to unveil a show car version of the entry-level EV in March 2025, providing a clearer look at its design and features. Meanwhile, the Wolfsburg plant will focus on preparing for next-generation EV production, making it Volkswagen’s innovation hub.
