Kailash Gahlot, the minister of transport for Delhi, said on Wednesday that 16.7 per cent of the automobiles sold in December 2022 were electric vehicles, and that these numbers demonstrated how open the citizens of the city were to embracing the new technology.
Speaking during a press conference, Gahlot said that 7,046 electric vehicles were sold in December and that among all states and union territories, Delhi had the highest percentage of EV sales that month.
The contribution will rise to 20.5 per cent in the month if the sales of hybrid-petrol automobiles are taken into account. As per him, Delhi registered 7,046 electric vehicles in December, an increase of 86 per cent over the same month last year.
He highlighted that sales of electric vehicles have increased ever since the government announced its Electric Vehicle Policy in August 2020. In 2019, sales of electric vehicles accounted for 3.6 per cent of all vehicle sales, but by 2022, that percentage had increased to 10.27 per cent.
"The people of Delhi have embraced the new technologies. Due to COVID-19, the share of electric vehicles in overall sales decreased to 2.9 per cent in 2020; however, it increased to 5.6 per cent in 2021. The total contribution of electric vehicles in 2016 was 10.7 per cent " he added.
There are 1.9 lakh electric vehicles on Delhi's roads, and since the policy's implementation, 93,239 of them have been sold there.
Since the introduction of the EV policy, Delhi has registered 93,239 electric vehicles as of 31 December 2022. According to the Transport department, roughly 55 per cent of all EV sales in 2022 were two-wheelers.
With more than 2300 charging stations and over 200 battery switching stations spread out over the city, we are prepared for the increasing number of electric vehicles, according to Gahlot.
On 07 August 2020, the Delhi EV Policy 2020 was introduced, designating two- and three-wheelers as the priority vehicle category.
The goal of the strategy is for electric vehicles to be quickly adopted and make up 25 per cent of all new vehicle registrations by 2024. According to the statement, out of the 93,239 EVs that have been registered overall since the policy's start, 5,189 were registered in 2020, 25,809 in 2021, and 62,241 in 2022.
High-speed two-wheelers made up nearly 55 per cent of its overall sales in 2022, an increase from 29 per cent in 2021. The sales of three-wheelers, which included e-rickshaws, electric cars, and cargo trucks, contributed 35 per cent.
Private cars registered more frequently than commercial taxis under four-wheelers, while the overall 4W vehicle segment made up 9 per cent of registrations. According to the report, the bus segment performed well, contributing 0.6 per cent, and 399 buses were registered in 2022.
Since the announcement of an incentive program for the section in June of last year, more than 500 e-cycles have also been sold, it was said.
