Mercedes-Benz R&D India Expands Sustainability Garage with Two New Centres

The first center is a climate incubator which will support 25 companies focused on sustaibility.

Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has expanded its “Sustainability Garage” initiative by opening two new Centres of Excellence in Hyderabad and New Delhi. The announcement was made at the Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2024 in New Delhi.

The first new centre, called the Climate Tech Incubator, aims to support 25 small businesses focused on green technology and sustainable transportation. MBRDI will provide these businesses with funding, expert guidance, and other resources. In partnership with T-Hub, a startup incubator, the program will also involve over 500 students in workshops to develop new solutions for climate challenges.

The second centre, which will focus on charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, is being set up with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). It will train 60 people this year to help meet the growing demand for electric vehicle charging stations.

Renata Jungo Brüngger, a Member of the Board of management at Mercedes-Benz, said, “Sustainability means creating lasting value for everyone involved. As a global company, we want to contribute positively to society, beyond just our business. The Sustainability Garage reflects our aim to promote environmental sustainability and community support.”

Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI, added, “The new projects under the Sustainability Garage will help develop sustainable transportation solutions from India to address global challenges. We believe India’s research and development talent and innovative spirit can lead to transformative solutions.”

Earlier this year, in February, the first Centre of Excellence was launched at the Prayoga Institute of Education Research, focusing on creating sustainable materials.

The Mercedes-Benz Sustainability Dialogue India 2024, held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, featured discussions on reducing carbon emissions, recycling, traffic safety, and building trust in digital technology. The event included participants like Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa; Amir Bazaz, Indian Institute of Human Settlements; Sonal Shah, Centre for Sustainable and Equitable Cities; and other leaders in the field.

Since 2008, Mercedes-Benz has organized Sustainability Dialogues in India, Germany, China, and the USA to engage with various groups, including businesses, academics, government officials, and non-profit organizations, on important sustainability issues.
