Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI): Empowering Tomorrow's Technicians

By empowering women and rural youth, TTTI is not only contributing to the growth of the automotive manufacturing sector but also paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future

Located in Bidadi, Karnataka, the Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI) stands as a beacon of skill development and education in the field of automobile manufacturing. Established in 2007 by Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), TTTI has played a pivotal role in bridging the skills gap and providing cutting-edge training to youth, particularly from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across Karnataka.

Expansion and Growth

TKM is expanding its horizons with the establishment of a third plant in Bidadi, Karnataka, with an investment of Rs. 3,300 crore. This new plant, expected to produce 1,00,000 vehicles annually, will significantly boost TKM's production capacity. Currently, Plant-1 operates three shifts, while Plant-2 operates two shifts, collectively producing 3,42,000 vehicles per year. The integration of female technicians, trained at TTTI, into the new assembly line is a strategic move by TKM to leverage the diverse skill sets and perspectives women bring to the workplace.

The Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI): Empowering Women Through Education

The Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI), a key part of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), is revolutionising the manufacturing industry by empowering women through education and training. With its first batch of 235 female technicians ready to graduate, TTTI is not only bridging the gender gap but also preparing a skilled workforce for the automotive manufacturing sector.

The TTTI Experience: Nurturing Future Technicians

Established in 2007 with an initial batch of 64 students, TTTI has grown into a beacon of technical education in Karnataka. The institute focuses on holistic development, combining technical skills, academic knowledge, and personality development. Students undergo rigorous training in vehicle assembly technologies, quality, and productivity, all within the framework of the renowned Toyota Production System (TPS).

A typical day at TTTI begins with a four-kilometer run, followed by a dynamic assembly session featuring loud greetings and physical activities. This routine helps students from rural backgrounds overcome shyness and build confidence and teamwork skills. Classes run from 9 am to 4 pm, covering both technical and academic subjects, followed by club activities and garden management, which further instill responsibility and teamwork.

Academic Excellence and Achievements

TTTI celebrated a significant milestone in August 2023 with its convocation ceremony, where degrees were conferred upon 62 regular students from the outgoing batch of 2020-2023, including 5 female students. Additionally, the first batch of Toyota Kaushalya students, numbering 41, graduated under this unique initiative aimed at nurturing talent from rural Karnataka.

Industry Partnership and New Initiatives

The institute's commitment to excellence is further underscored by its partnerships and initiatives. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Karnataka and Toyota Kirloskar Motor paved the way for a new manufacturing plant in Bidadi, with an investment exceeding Rs. 3,300 crores. This facility, slated for completion by 2026, aims to bolster production capacity by 1,00,000 units annually and generate approximately 2000 new jobs, thus contributing significantly to local employment and economic growth.

Tailored Curriculum for Comprehensive Learning

TTTI offers a comprehensive curriculum focusing on practical skills and theoretical knowledge essential for the automotive industry. Courses such as Automobile Assembly, Welding, Painting, and Mechatronics equip students with expertise aligned with global manufacturing practices. The institute emphasizes holistic development, allocating significant resources to physical fitness, community service, and experiential learning through Toyota's renowned Production System.

TTTI offers two main courses as- the Toyota Regular Course and the Toyota Kaushalya Course. The Regular Course, a three-year program, started in 2007 and covers trades in automobile assembly, welding, paint, and mechatronics. The Kaushalya Course, a two-year program initiated in 2021, aims to train 564 students annually, with an equal split between boys and girls aged 18 to 20.

The curriculum at TTTI is designed with a 70 per cent focus on on-the-job training and 30 per cent on skill development. This hands-on approach ensures students gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge, preparing them for real-world challenges in the manufacturing industry. The rigorous selection process, including physical exams, teamwork assessments, interviews, and background checks, ensures that only the most dedicated and capable students are admitted.

The IDEA Framework and Sustainability

TKM's adherence to the IDEA framework—Interface reduction, Danger duplication, Ergonomics improvement, and Auxiliary work—is integral to its operations. The company also employs Karakuri Kaizen, a concept that optimizes machinery with minimal automated resources, significantly reducing electricity usage and CO2 emissions. These practices ensure that TTTI graduates are well-versed in sustainable manufacturing techniques.

Recognition and Global Competitions

TTTI's commitment to excellence is evident from its students' stellar performances in national and international competitions. Notably, students have secured medals and accolades in prestigious events like the World Skills Competition, showcasing their prowess in Mechatronics, Car Painting, and Prototype Modelling.

Future Prospects and Industry Engagement

Looking ahead, TTTI remains steadfast in its mission to empower the next generation of technicians. The institute's expansion plans include new dormitory facilities and a two-year "Learn & Earn Scheme," aimed at further enhancing skill development and employment opportunities for youth in Karnataka. This initiative not only supports the 'Skill India' vision but also underscores TKM's commitment to fostering talent and advancing the automotive sector's technological capabilities.

TTTI's mission is to produce industry-ready professionals who can meet the demands of the modern workforce. With strong ties to TKM and other group companies, TTTI ensures ample employment opportunities for its graduates. Over 51 per cent of graduates work with TKM, while others join group companies, supplier partners, and various industries.

The recent expansion of TTTI, doubling its intake to 1,200 students, including up to 600 female students by March 2025, reflects the institute's commitment to inclusivity and gender diversity. TKM aims to train over 5,00,000 youths by 2030 and expand the TTTI model across India, contributing significantly to the country's manufacturing sector and sustainability goals.

Conclusion: A Vision for the Future

In conclusion, TTTI continues to set benchmarks in technical education and skill development, driven by Toyota's unwavering commitment to quality, innovation, and social responsibility. By nurturing talent and promoting inclusivity, TTTI is not only shaping skilled professionals but also contributing to the socio-economic fabric of Karnataka and beyond.
