Volkswagen Group Is Testing Electric Vehicles Under Skoda Brand For India

German car major Volkswagen According to a senior company official, the group has started testing some of Škoda’s electric vehicles in India as it evaluates products to be brought into the country for mass segment-oriented electric mobility.

The group, which has tasked Škoda Auto with growth in India, will also continue to focus on internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as it believes mass adoption of electric vehicles will depend on the development of the country’s ecosystem and infrastructure, said Piyush Arora, managing director Škoda Auto Volkswagen India.

“We understand that there is a demand for electric cars in India, so we have already launched the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-Tron, which are doing very well in the Indian market,” he said. PTI in an interview.

At the same time, he added: “We also evaluate Škoda and Volkswagen and what products we should bring to the Indian electric mobility market. We have already launched several test vehicles for the Škoda brand, we will assess the opportune time to launch them in India.” Arora was responding to a query about VW Group’s plans to produce electric vehicles in the sub-luxury Indian market.

The all-electric Porsche Taycan has a starting price of Rs 1.5 crore, while the Audi e-tron ranges from Rs 99.99 lakh to Rs 1.18 crore.

Regarding electromobility, he said: “We have taken a top-down approach with our luxury brands, already bringing products to market. Both Audi and Porsche have very successful electric cars in the Indian market.” He went on to say: “We are also looking at Volkswagen and ŠKODA cars that we can bring. We’re testing some of these cars and once we’ve decided on a model, the next step will be to build one of the cars locally from here. Afterwards, we will move on to the localization of the portfolio when the market is ready.”

Arora said electrification is happening at different levels around the world: Europe has already committed to selling all new zero-emission cars by 2035, while China is moving at a very fast pace and North America is expected to follow suit. at a faster pace.

The expectation that India would move was not very high, but the country has started to show early signs that it is moving at a much faster pace, he added.
