Sustainability Beyond The Vehicle: Mahindra Unveils EV Manufacturing Hub In Pune

Mahindra has invested ₹4,500 crore in this facility, out of the total ₹16,000 crore planned for the F22–F27 investment cycle

Indian SUV manufacturer, Mahindra has officially unveiled its new cutting-edge EV (Electric Vehicles) manufacturing and battery assembly facility at Chakan, Pune. The facility is designed exclusively for producing Electric Origin SUVs, which includes powertrain development, two product top hats including software & tech and manufacturing capacity. Mahindra has invested ₹4,500 crore out of the total ₹16,000 crore planned for the F22–F27 investment cycle.

Revolutionising Manufacturing with Advanced Automation

Spanning 88,000 square meters, this EV manufacturing hub boasts around 98 per cent automation which integrates over 1,000 robots and leverages Industry 4.0 technologies for unmatched precision and efficiency.

Key highlights include:

Mahindra’s EV manufacturing hub is a fully integrated, highly automated manufacturing ecosystem that leverages over 1000 robots and multiple automated transfer systems. Alongside a strong focus on skill development and quality, the EV facility targets a 25% gender diversity ratio, reinforcing the plant’s inclusive and future-ready work culture. Driven by this foundation, Mahindra is now charged up to roll out next-generation Electric Origin SUVs.

  • AI-Driven Body Shop: Over 500 robots ensure seamless operations, monitored through an IoT-based “Nerve Center” for real-time insights.
  • Pixel Painting: India’s first highly customisable, automated paint shop, offering precision and personalisation.
  • Material Handling Excellence: Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) streamline material movement, reducing production time and improving safety.
  • Battery Assembly Leadership: Compact and fully automated, the battery manufacturing line uses patented processes for high performance and durability.

Technological Innovations in EVs

Mahindra’s Electric Origin SUVs are built on the Inglo platform, prioritising cutting-edge tech, safety, and performance. Features like ultra-low rolling resistance tires, UV-protected glass, illuminated glass infinity roofs, and a revive mode offering extra range underline Mahindra’s focus on innovation. To ensure these advanced vehicles remain functional for years, Mahindra has equipped its service centers with specialised tools and trained technicians, ensuring seamless maintenance support.

Sustainability Beyond the Vehicle

The facility’s operations mirror the sustainability of Mahindra’s EVs. A standout feature is the water-positive operation, achieving 131 per cent water positivity, and a 71 per cent reduction in carbon footprint per vehicle since the plant's inception. The plant also runs entirely on renewable energy, aligning with Mahindra’s sustainability goals and COP26 commitments.

Rainwater harvesting systems, energy-efficient processes, and AI-driven efficiency metrics reinforce Mahindra’s pledge to not only build green vehicles but also to do so sustainably.

Future-Focused Design and Global Aspirations

The Electric Origin SUVs are designed with future mobility trends in mind, incorporating advanced NVH attributes, enhanced noise absorption, and sustainable materials. Mahindra also emphasized export readiness, with plans to take these globally acclaimed models to international markets.

Empowering Workforce and Communities

Mahindra’s Chakan facility is not just about robots. The company aims for a 25 per cent gender diversity ratio and has prioritised employing individuals from rural areas. Comprehensive training ensures a skilled workforce capable of handling next-generation EV manufacturing and servicing.

Final Word

In less than 18 months, Mahindra has transformed its vision into reality, rolling out its first vehicle from the Chakan plant in January 2024. By combining advanced technology, automation, and sustainability, Mahindra’s new facility underscores its ambition to make India a global hub for electric vehicles. With these strides, Mahindra is not just building EVs—it’s building the future of mobility.
