Volvo’s flagship SUV—the XC90—has been a familiar name in India’s premium SUV segment for years. However, with the recent launch of the updated XC90, Volvo Car India has introduced a series of meaningful upgrades that take this flagship SUV to the next level. The new XC90 brings a meaningful set of upgrades that set it apart from the outgoing version, let’s take a closer look at what’s new and how it differs from the older version.

Exterior

The first noticeable change lies in the exterior design. The new XC90 gets a sharper, more contemporary look, starting with a redesigned front grille featuring Volvo’s updated iron mark logo. The front bumper, hood, and fenders have been sculpted to give it a more muscular presence. One of the standout additions is the slim, signature T-shaped Matrix LED headlights, which are not only sleeker but offer better illumination.

At the rear, the tail lamps now have a darker, more refined design. A fresh set of 20-inch wheels and the introduction of a striking new Mulberry Red exterior colour complete the visual refresh. Compared to the previous XC90, which already had a commanding road presence, these tweaks make the SUV feel thoroughly modern and more aligned with Volvo’s global design language.

Interiors

Inside the cabin, Volvo has focused on enhancing both technology and comfort. The new XC90 introduces a larger, crisper 11.2-inch central touchscreen that offers better resolution and a more intuitive user interface. The dashboard has been redesigned with horizontal lines and features premium recycled material inserts, giving it a clean, minimalist appeal. The air vents have also been reshaped into a vertical design, accompanied by improved ambient lighting, creating a more luxurious atmosphere. Sound insulation has been upgraded as well, making the cabin noticeably quieter—an important factor, especially on noisy Indian roads.

Additionally, the second-row captain seats now come with redesigned armrests and integrated cupholders, providing more convenience for families and long-distance travelers. Volvo’s signature Bowers & Wilkins sound system has also received a refresh with new speaker mesh designs, further enhancing the in-cabin experience.

Safety

When it comes to safety, Volvo has always been at the forefront, and the new XC90 builds on this legacy. While the older model was already equipped with robust safety systems, the updated version features smarter, more responsive driver-assistance technology. It includes improved lane-keeping aid, using radar and camera-based corrections to steer the car back into its lane if needed. The SUV also brings enhanced collision avoidance systems that can detect not just other vehicles but also pedestrians, cyclists, and even large animals—essential for unpredictable driving environments. Additionally, the upgraded Pilot Assist and adaptive cruise control offer a more confident and stress-free driving experience.

Another key area of improvement is the suspension and ride quality. While the previous XC90 delivered a smooth ride, Volvo has fine-tuned the new model’s chassis. It now comes with Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) damper technology, which adapts to changing road conditions for better comfort and stability. The optional air suspension system has also been enhanced, allowing the ride height to be lowered for improved aerodynamics or raised by up to 40mm to tackle rough terrain—something Indian drivers will definitely appreciate.

Engine

Under the hood, the new XC90 retains its familiar 1969cc petrol mild-hybrid engine, producing 250hp and 360Nm of torque. However, Volvo has refined the software and mild-hybrid system for better efficiency and smoother performance. It may not be a drastic change in power output, but the subtle tweaks ensure the SUV feels more responsive and fuel-efficient.

All in all, the new Volvo XC90 isn’t just a facelift; it’s a thoughtful upgrade that improves in all the right areas. For existing XC90 owners, the changes might feel like fine-tuning, but for new buyers looking at the luxury SUV segment, these enhancements make it a strong contender.

Deliveries for the refreshed XC90 begin in March 2025, but the excitement around its modern design, advanced safety features, and upgraded technology keeps it relevant even weeks after launch.
