Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEM) have formed a partnership to install over 7,000 EV charging stations across the country, significantly improving the accessibility and convenience of EV owners.
The agreement takes advantage of both companies' strengths. The physical infrastructure for the charging stations will be provided by BPCL, which has a network of over 21,000 fuel stations.
TPEM will ensure that the chargers are strategically located in areas frequented by Tata EV owners, drawing on experience in the electric vehicle market and insights from Tata EVs on the road.
BPCL will utilise data gathered from charger usage to constantly improve the customer experience and address evolving needs. To increase convenience, TPEM and BPCL are looking into the possibility of introducing a co-branded RFID card, which would allow for simple and hassle-free payment at charging stations.
Santosh Kumar, Executive Director, In-charge Retail, BPCL, said, “BPCL is steadily moving closer to its goal of converting 7,000 of our conventional retail outlets into energy stations, which is part of a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy to support and prioritise sustainable initiatives. BPCL has already set up a very large network of fast charging stations across highways. EV is a field of collaboration, and we believe that joining hands with TPEM will take the EV game of BPCL and TPEM to the next level.”
The impact of this collaboration is expected to be far-reaching. By significantly increasing the availability of charging stations, BPCL and TPEM aim to address one of the key roadblocks to widespread EV adoption in India.
BPCL and TPEM are attempting to change the way people drive and charge their vehicles in India by combining their expertise and resources.
